Sirius' prank was a betrayal in more ways than one. Not only because Snape could have been killed. Not even just because if Snape had died, it would have been Azkaban or the Kiss for Remus.

But because he knew full well what Severus and Remus were to each other. And he regarded that as a betrayal in its turn, which he was determined to end. Remus would never understand how Sirius could have been prepared to make his best friend murder his lover for such a petty reason.

Sirius got what he wanted, in the end. Snape never forgave Remus. And a little more of the once-inviolable trust between Moony and Padfoot leaked away…
