Oh God.

It's gone. It's all gone. And there doesn't seem to be much hope that they'll ever get much, or any, of it back.

I've never hated the Bush administration as much as I do today. Why the hell didn't they send enough troops to stop things like that happening, if they were going to send any at all?

Because they only sent in enough troops to get rid of Saddam's government. They did not send in enough troops to take over the country and run it as a military dictatorship, which is what you're suggesting should have happened.

It didn't have to be forever! It didn't even have to be for very long! They'll be out of there soon enough anyway, so all they had to do was send enough troops to protect the hospitals and museums until they get whoever they *want* in government set up, which is what they're going to do anyway...

Oh Jesus. Oh my God. I can't even...they've taken it all, all that history. I know that it happens everywhere, that history gets destroyed by bombing and things like that, but for people to loot it when it could have been so easily protected?

Why?

Apparently, one of the security guards tried to do his job, and the mob outside threatened to shoot him. So he just went home and cried.

I just... people just make me sick sometimes.

I just don't see why it was necessary to destroy the regular police force. Whatever form of secret police there was, OK. But surely there must have been a police force whose job was actually investigating everyday crime? Wouldn't it have been more sensible to work with them?

Well, according to our brilliant Mr. Rumsfeld:
"In a Friday Pentagon press briefing, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld blamed the international media for the looting in Baghdad, claiming that it was not as widespread as cameras were showing. 'Stuff happens,' he said."

...."Stuff happens." what a very articulate explanation.
