"Those Amish people, everyone is sitting around talking about those poor little girls — blah, blah, blah — they brought the wrath upon themselves,"
Wow. That's good Christian compassion right there. *eyeroll*
I think I can explain pretty easily.
The man's a poisonous little weed, is what.
The only good feeling I got after reading that article is newfound respect for Ed Rendell.
The Phelpses are such crazy bastards that even Fox News disdains them. That says it all right there. God, I hate those fuckers so much. I just cannot comprehend how anyone can take them seriously.
Are they even reading the same Bible as the rest of the world? The one about how God is merciful, compassionate, and loving? The one about how Jesus never actually says anything himself about homosexuality, btw?
Did you see the clip of Phelps' wife getting the riot act read to her on Fox? Thing of beauty, man.
I did not!
I know the clip of which she speaks! Will attempt to find it for you--it made me heart Fox News for about the first time ever.

Has freedom of expression under the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution, and despite how loathesome a human being he actually is he has the right to make a complete asshat out of himself.
Make no mistake - I think he's reprehensible. But he has the right here to be reprehensible.
He should not, however, have the right to add to the anguish of the bereaved by parading his garbage at funerals. They should pick him up under the decency laws - his sadistic prejudices are indecently exposed!
(Actually, I think that should be classified as a form of assualt. It is a deliberate attempt to cause and add to trauma.)

Re: Fred Phelps...
Funerals at public graveyards are, by definition, not private functions. And Phelps and his ilk are careful to stand far enough back that they're not physically intruding.
Believe me, the guy's been sued more than just about anyone else I can think of.

Re: Fred Phelps...
Not sure about this, but I think the Amish have their own cemetaries, and Amish land is private land.

Yes... Fred Phelps has many problems... like when he killed his oldest son's wife.
tell me more?
That guy should be kicked off the island FOREVER. Gaah. Seriously, it just boggles my mind how someone can be THAT STUPID and that hateful.
It almost makes me wish for the second coming just so I can see Jesus drop-kick the guy in the nuts.
