Had a random fit of tears this morning. I think my continued state of unemployment is wearing me down. I need to get out of this house, even just a few days a week. I'm going into Coulsdon tomorrow to see if there's any charity shops that need people, and if I find nothing there, then Banstead. Mum says I should do something, anyway, because it'll sound better at interview than having done "nothing" for six months.

Of course, it doesn't help that I have a clinically depressed teenage boy living in my head. Don't even ask...

Ouchie! The voluntary work thing is a really great idea, and even if the charity shops don't need anybody, I'm sure there are other voluntary associations which do need people. I guess part of the problem is finding something close by that you can get to easily. Because if you're doing it for free you can't really be spending tons of money on train fares. But it is a good idea and will look good on a CV. BTW, I've been there, and it's enormously frustrating. I found part-time voluntary work helped structure out my day, though. I wasn't sitting at home calling up about jobs where they didn't want me, or poring over my CV wondering what was so wrong with it that nobody would hire me. Incidentally, I seem to remember you passing the Civil Service exam recently. So does that mean you're eligible to apply for Civil Service jobs now? I'm not really sure how it works there.

The Civil Service exam gets me onto the books of their administrative agency, and -- I think -- gives me access to certain jobs that won't be advertised anywhere else, or not unless the agency fails to fill them at least.

So it's a step forward, but it only happened very recently, so nothing's come through yet.

Got any friends in London who might need someone to work for them? I'll even work for travel reimbursement only, to get the experience...

Some sort of charity/volunteering work always looks good on a CV, good luck with your search. If you need someone to come and wander round with you I'm back in England from Sunday.
