Legolas knows what must be done. The loss of Aragorn changes nothing. The battle must still be fought, hopeless though it seems, until it is won or until every defender lies dead.

Despite his encroaching despair, Legolas prays that it will soon begin. Then he can lose himself in the battle, and he will not have to remember. If he is lucky, perhaps he will fall - a quicker death than fading.

He has never felt more tired of this life. And surrounded by Rohirrim, and although Gimli is with him, Legolas has never felt more alone.
