The more I read up on civil and basic human rights, the more convinced I become that we in the West are gradually losing them, and most people don't even notice.
I remember the occupation of Sussex House, in my second year. Well, it's kind of hard to forget, considering I've still got the resulting scars on my hands, and I saw my friends beaten and choked just for being there. Dave had the marks on his neck for over a week where the security guard tried to throttle him, and Alex ended up with a concussion because he was knocked to the ground and hit his head on the curb.
And we weren't even inside, we were just showing our support outside the building. It was worse for those who were taking part in the actual occupation. Sukant was half-choked with someone's elbow round his throat, Milo was sick four times because of what they did to him (and the others were so worried about him they actually called an ambulance), and Dan was - illegally - dragged out of a window, partly by his hair, cutting his arm to shreds on the frame in the process.
And through all this, the police did nothing. You can bet your bottom dollar they'd have been quick to jump in and make arrests if one of us had actually tried to fight back.
So much for the right to non-violent protest.
And now this new Terrorism Bill...
Our civil rights are being stripped away, and unless more people wake up to that fact soon, it's going to be too late.
I know what you mean.
I just hope I don't live to see the day this all comes to a horrific conclusion. And by that I mean more horrific than the atrocities commited today. I mean, I shudder to think of what happened to you guys. I don't want to know what will happen to us all in the end.
Ok, I'm just rambling now, so I'll go. :D
Thank you! Finally, SOMEONE WHO MAKES SOME SENSE! I could kiss you! I won't, but THANK you!
