The healer walked out of Rose's room, shaking her head sadly, and Sam sighed and bowed his head. He'd known this day was coming soon since his Rosie had first fallen ill, but that didn't make its arrival one bit easier.

He'd have to tell the children and grandchildren now. He'd been preparing himself for months, and he wasn't ready in the slightest.

The worst thing was not the grief, but the treacherous relief. Part of him had wanted to follow Frodo since his friend had left. Now he was free to do so.

And the guilt was almost unbearable.
