I think that the church who are having the gay priest don't require a vow of celibacy as their priests can marry. The priest is celibate of his own choice and if I remember rigth has a long term partner.
I think that's rigth anyway
The priest in quesiton in the current 'should he be a Bishop?' debacle is CoE, I think, and there's no celibacy rule for them.
I adore your new icon! But where did you find the screencaps of Gil-Galad? Because he can't be in the film for more than ten seconds...
The shot of them running was a behind the scenes bit from the 'theatrical version' of the FOTR DVD. It must have been a cut scene, they're running along, Gil-galad shouts something in elvish, they halt. It's all very militaristic and sexy. :p The other pics are ones that I've collected from various places in my on-going quest to collect every picture Gil-galad known to man.
They actually filmed Gil-galad's death scene. It sounded very cool, if uncanonical. Sauron picks him up by the neck, sets him on fire and hurls him across the battle field. That, I would have liked to have seen!

Hmmm. I really see your point, although I think they're more concerned about just the *idea* of who their preferred gender is. Gah. Religion is abitrary.
It seems that throughout history there's never been a sortage of priests indulging in paedophilia - someone with a bright spark once suggested women priests as the answer, but appartently the Vatican considers men destroying boy's lives a lesser evil than women putting on the holy frock. Priorities.
Since the church outlawed condoms they can talk about unsafe sex. The counterargument has been that therefore gay couples must engage in unprotected sex. The church's counsel is "No, they must remain celibate" So what's dangerous about it?
I dunno about that debate per se, I added you to my friends list, because I too, have been tickled by John Rhys-Davies.
I grabbed his rear in thanks.
Were you at Collectormania, then? Or was it somewhere else?
It was at the Two Towers Oscar Party.
He started tickling me so I gave his tuchas a squeeze and then he returned that favor. Then a bunch of fangirls saw us and he fled.
I'm just incredibly jealous of both of you. Getting tickled or squeezed by that one would give me quite a thrill :)
In Anglican/CoE, priests can get married and even ahve kids. So it's actually more debate worthy than the same situation would be if it were a catholic priest. Because Catholic priests aren't supposed to be having sex with anyone, it shouldn't matter what their preferance is if they're not allowed ot act on it anyway.

I think you commented on another entry on my journal. So it was you who found me, possibly on the "Random User" thing...

Same to you!
But the fact is the Catholic Church has decided being gay is unnatural, so it doesn't make sense if its priests are gay.
Although, as always, upper class priests have different views from missioners (sp?), jesuits and such.
And I don't understand why do they have to be celibate, since it brings more problems than having a normal sexual, life. I mean, they are very repressed, and they always turn into sex-obsessed, chest gaping old men.
I believe that the point is that this particular gay priest, the one who is being appointed to a bishop, is living in a 'platonic relationship' with another gay man who has been his partner in the past, but who he is now not having a sexual relationship with (yeah, right). He also has not 'repented' being gay. He's only not allowed to have sex now he's becoming a bishop - the lower clergy are allowed to have sexual relationships in C of E.
