Sam watched in horror as Frodo stood, still as stone, at the crack of Mount Doom, and cringed in terror as he heard his master's words.

"I have come. But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!"

And with that, he put on the Ring and vanished.

Sam hung his head in defeat and sorrow. So, the quest had come to nothing and, one way or another, Middle Earth was doomed.

But worst of all, Frodo, who should never have been asked to do this thing, was lost.
