It had become a Hogwarts tradition that the Grey Lady should see off each generation of students to begin their lives in the wider world. It seemed appropriate that the ghost overseeing Ravenclaw, the house known for academic achievement, should symbolically end the children's education.

There were other reasons, though. In life, she had had a gift for detecting darkness in human souls, and it had not left her in death. The authorities went to her to learn which ex-students they should watch.

The arrival of the children of Harry Potter's generation marked the first year when her role was purely symbolic.
